Japanese writing is basically phonogram, so just learn kanji along with your progress of acquiring the language and building up your vocabulary. kanji is just an alternative (well, more decent, if i can say so) way to put down the words.. I’m gonna learn japanese! then you start researching a bit. you start learning about hiragana, and katakana, and kanji, and weird-o grammar, and pitch accents. and thus the seed of doubt is planted. so you hop on google, and search for, “hours required to learn japanese,” or something like that.. Kanji is an integral part of learning japanese as a whole. but if you need any convincing, the most important thing to remember is kanji makes learning japanese easier , not harder. yes, kanji is hard, but that’s because learning japanese is hard. if you have a year of 4 hours a day, it would seem counter-productive to completely skip kanji..
But it takes a long time, usually more than 5 years, even for japanese children to learn to read and write a good number of kanji characters. (but i guess it will also take not a short time for english speakers to learn to write well.).
